Essential Japan Travel Guide

🚆 Navigating the Shinkansen

Japan's bullet trains (Shinkansen) are marvels of engineering, famous for their extreme punctuality.

  • The JR Pass: The Japan Rail Pass allows unlimited travel on JR lines. Following a recent price increase, it's crucial to calculate if it's worth it for your specific route (we do this math for you!).
  • Luggage Rules: If you are traveling with oversized luggage (total dimensions > 160cm) on the Tokaido Shinkansen (Tokyo-Kyoto), you must reserve a specific seat with baggage space, or face a fine.
  • Silence is Golden: Never talk on your mobile phone while riding a train in Japan. Keep conversations quiet out of respect for fellow passengers.

⛩️ Japanese Etiquette & Culture

Respect is the cornerstone of Japanese society. Follow these simple rules to blend in.

  • Absolutely No Tipping: Tipping at restaurants, hotels, or taxis is not practiced in Japan. If you leave money on the table, the waiter will chase you down the street to return it!
  • Shoes Off: You must remove your shoes when entering homes, ryokans (traditional inns), temples, and some restaurants. Always wear clean socks without holes!
  • Eating & Walking: It is considered rude to walk and eat at the same time. If you buy street food, stand near the stall to finish it before moving on.

🌸 Best Time to Visit

Japan is defined by its distinct seasons.

  • Spring (Late March - Mid April): The famous Sakura (cherry blossom) season. The country turns pink, but it is also the most crowded and expensive time to visit.
  • Autumn (Late Oct - Nov): The Momiji (autumn foliage) season. The weather is cool and dry, and the vibrant red maple leaves are arguably just as beautiful as the cherry blossoms.
  • Avoid Golden Week: The first week of May is a string of national holidays. The entire country travels internally, making trains and hotels impossibly crowded.

📱 Visas & Connectivity

Stay connected and prepared.

  • E-Visa for Indians: Indian passport holders can now apply for an e-Visa to Japan, making the process much smoother than in the past. We assist with all required documentation.
  • Pocket Wi-Fi / eSIM: Navigating Tokyo's labyrinth-like subway system requires Google Maps. Renting a Pocket Wi-Fi at the airport or downloading an eSIM before arrival is absolutely mandatory for a stress-free trip.
